But should you actually turn off your tablet when you are not planning on using it for an extended period of time?
There is no need to turn your tablet off when it is not in use because it will just remain in a low-power mode on standby. When you want to decrease the power consumption, you can just keep it in airplane mode on standby. That way, you will be able to guarantee that its battery will still last when not in use.
The problem that a lot of people tend to have in relation to their tablets is that they will still continue to consume a bit of power when they are on standby. It’s similar to how your smartphone’s battery is no longer full the moment you wake up in the morning even if you left it with a full charge before you went to bed. However, even if not in use, there really is no need for you to turn your tablet off except for certain circumstances that we are going to talk about.
Should I turn off my tablet when not in use?
One of the features that smart devices have always had is the standby mode that allows them to be in a low-power state so that there is no actual need for you to turn them off when you are not using them. This is not the same as the sleep mode that your laptop comes with. Even if you put your laptop in sleep mode, there is still a need for you to turn it off when you are not planning to use it anytime soon because of how this will extend the lifespan of its parts.
However, when it comes to your mobile smart devices such as your tablet, you probably don’t remember the last time you turned them off. Be honest in saying that you probably never turned your tablet off since the first time you turned it on when you brought it home with you. Well, there may have been instances when it had to reboot after an update but you might not remember the last time you actually turned it off and left it untouched.
So, in such a case, is there an actual need for you to turn your tablet off when it is not in use? After all, we have always been fine with putting it in its standby or sleep mode as it has never gotten damaged that way. That said, should you consider turning the tablet off when you are not using it?
Well, the truth is that it won’t hurt to turn the tablet off when you are not using it or when you are not planning on using it for a while. This will allow you to save its battery because it won’t be using its power when it is actually turned off. However, another truth that you should know is that there really is no need for you to turn it off even when you are not planning to use it or when you are about to go to bed and you don’t think that you are going to use it until tomorrow.
That’s because putting the tablet in a low-power state will not consume a lot of power. A tablet that is in standby mode will only use enough power to keep itself turned on but it won’t be using a lot of it since most of its other components aren’t in use. As such, there is no need for you to turn off your tablet when you are not using it.
In fact, turning it off defeats the purpose of what makes a tablet such a useful and convenient device. A tablet that is simply on standby mode can immediately be used the moment you push a button. This is what makes it a more convenient machine compared to a laptop, which still needs a bit of time to become fully functional when you wake it up from sleep mode.
But if you really want to save more battery life when you are not using your tablet, the trick here is to put it in airplane mode so that its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular capabilities are all turned off and are not consuming power. While you won’t be getting any alerts this way, it still should be fine because of how you probably aren’t planning on using your tablet anytime soon if you are even planning on shutting it down.
So, by keeping it in airplane mode, you are going to save a lot of power all while retaining the tablet’s ability to quickly become usable whenever there is a need for you to quickly use it. As such, there is no need for you to turn it off even when you are not using it.
When is it a good time to turn your tablet off?
Even though we did say that there is no need for you to turn your tablet off when you are not using it, there are still some instances when you might want to turn it off. Here are some of them:
1. Quick charging
If you are not using a quick charger and you want to charge your tablet as quickly as possible because you need it in a hurry, turning it off will certainly help because the tablet won’t be using any power whatsoever. That way, you can cut the time it needs to charge so that you can rush off to do what you need to do once the tablet’s battery has been completely charged.
2. During a long travel
Tablets are great for long travels because of how convenient and easy they are to use for people who are on the go. However, when you are in the middle of a long trip such as when you are in a car, a bus, or an airplane and you don’t have many opportunities to charge your tablet, you may want to turn it off until the next time you use it so that you can preserve its battery. This also applies to those who are in the middle of an outdoor trip since the opportunities to charge a tablet while you are camping or hiking out in the woods are minimal at best.
3. When you really aren’t intending on using it for a long time
Finally, if you really aren’t planning on using your tablet for a very long time such as when you have no use for it (because you bought a newer one or because you simply prefer using your laptop), then there is no harm in turning the tablet off. After all, by turning it off, you will be preserving much of its remaining battery life so that, when you do plan to use it again perhaps after weeks or months of not using it, you no longer have to charge it.
